Cable cars: helpful or harmful??0Introduction
The Korean government announced its plan to build a new cable car route for Seorak Mountain. This has caused a lot of debate surrounding the use of cable cars. Some say that cable cars will revive regional economies. Others say that they are destructive to the environment. Let’s see what our debaters think.

Cable cars: helpful or harmful??3Constructive Debater 1 Henry
Cable cars are helpful. Cable cars on the mountains will allow more tourists to enjoy the nature and scenery. The cars will make it possible for the elderly and disabled to go to the mountain summit. Therefore, cable cars will surely boost tourism. Tourism generates a lot of money for the city. Finally, cable cars will replace tourist buses. This is good for the environment because buses create a lot of air pollution.

Cable cars are harmful. The building of cable cars will do environmental damage to the mountains. Builders will have to destroy large natural habitat areas. These habitats are the homes of thousands of animals. It is wrong to put development projects above the lives of animals and plants. Also, environmentalists are particularly worried about an endangered species of mountain goats. Building cable cars may lead to its extinction.

Cable cars: helpful or harmful??9Rebuttal Debater 1 Henry
You are more concerned about animals than humans! We should build cable cars because they are beneficial to us. Humans are more important than animals. Building cable cars may lead to the extinction of mountain goats. However, there are many other types of goats in the world. I support destroying the habitat of some animals if it will benefit the city. Cable cars will definitely improve the city.

Cable cars: helpful or harmful??12Rebuttal Debater 2 Ashley
If we build cable cars, more tourists may be able to enjoy the mountain scenery and nature. However, we will be destroying the homes of many animals so that humans can climb a mountain. I am not saying that an animal’s life is more important than a human’s. However, I am saying that their lives are also valuable. We should consider this before building cable cars.

Cable cars: helpful or harmful??15Judge’s Comments
The winner of today’s debate is Ashley. Henry committed the fallacy called ad hominem. Debaters commit this fallacy when they attack the debater instead of the arguments. Henry said, “You are more concerned about animals than humans!” This is an unacceptable and unnecessary personal attack.
